Encore! School of Music 2011 Scholarship

At Encore!, our vision is to be a dynamic place where everyone can come to learn and enjoy music. We know that people who want to learn music are sometimes hindered from having lessons due to personal circumstances, such as financial difficulties. This is why we have offered a scholarship that enables the recipient to learn an instrument of their choice at Encore! School of Music throughout 2011.

We are proud to present Oo Meh Nga as the 2011 Encore! School of Music Scholarship Recipient. Oo Meh is a motivated young lady who is now learning the guitar with Hazel Fenemor. Check out Oo Meh's profile below.

Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Oo Meh and I am fourteen years old.  My family was originally from Burma but they fled to Thailand because of political instabilities. I grew up in a Thai refugee camp and arrived in New Zealand in 2006. I am currently a Year 9 student and my favourite subjects are art, maths and music.

Who's your favourite artiste?
I like Taylor Swift because she can sing and play the guitar beautifully.

Why did you apply for the Encore! School of Music scholarship?
I applied because I wanted to continue learning music.  I was previously learning guitar for a year with a teacher but we had to put the lessons on a hold because the family had other things that we had to prioritise in terms of our household budget.

What are your musical goals?
In the long term, I would like to be good at guitar and be a music teacher. My goal for this year is to play the guitar at our community Christmas party and to play in my church’s worship team.

How do you plan on achieving these goals?
I practise the guitar every day – it’s not hard because I really enjoy it!
