CATHERINE WILKINSON - PIANO, KEYBOARD, FLUTE & MUSIC THEORY WELLINGTON MUSIC TEACHER
Catherine was born and raised in Wellington. She has been involved in music since she was born. With a musical family, extending to grandparents, music was everywhere!
She began learning the piano at age 7, and flute at age 9, while singing in the local children’s choir. At high school she had 5 years of singing lessons, and was a member of several music groups. During this period she sat the Royal Schools of Music London, and Trinity College of London music exams in piano (Grade 8), and flute (Performer’s certificate). Outside of high school she was a member of the Wellington Junior Symphony Orchestra and Wellington Secondary Schools Symphonic Band.
Catherine graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music (History and Literature) and a Bachelor of Science (Psychology). The combination of these two passions led her to the discipline of Music Therapy. In December 2008, she graduated with a Master of Music Therapy from the New Zealand School of Music. Catherine is now a registered music therapist.
Currently Catherine has a wide variety of music jobs. She practises music therapy with primary school children around Wellington and engages in music teaching with students from a range of ages. In her spare time, she is a member
of the Tawa Orchestra, and Crofton Wind Ensemble. She also enjoys spending time with her two young nieces.
Catherine is enjoying being part of a team of musicians, who all love sharing their joy of music with others.
'Catherine has taken me from absolute beginner to sitting Grade 2 Trinity Exams on my flute in just 5 school terms, wow! I love Catherine’s teaching style, working at my pace, encouraging my strengths yet quietly and subtly improving my weaknesses along with being able to laugh with me at my efforts. Sometimes it is difficult for an older adult learner such as me to feel comfortable about taking on a new experience. I have always felt welcome at Encore! In class I have fun, laughs, amazing improvement and a new confidence. Catherine is such an enthusiastic, patient and knowledgeable teacher, I look forward to practice and lessons'. - Wendy Thomson, adult student
'Catherine has helped improve my flute playing in many ways, such as better tone, and better breath control. She is always cheerful and patient. She is an excellent tutor and I really enjoy learning from her'. - Jennifer Ong, aged 11
'I’ve really improved heaps since Catherine started teaching me piano. She can explain things so well, and it helps me learn more. Piano is fun!' - Madeleine, aged 9 years
'Inspiring and kind, fun, and a great teacher'. - Emma, aged 10 years
