Though he began his musical education on the Kapiti Coast with clarinet in year 6, it wasn’t until Adam picked up a saxophone in high school that he decided to pursue a career in music.
He studied jazz saxophone and earned a Bachelor of Music in performance from Massey University in 2001. Adam continued his education in New York City in 2004, studying privately under saxophonist Richard Tabnik, and returned in 2009 to study improvisation with renowned pianist Connie Crothers. Adam also traveled to Greece to study contemporary saxophone techniques, improvisation and composition with fellow kiwi Hayden Chisholm. These overseas experiences had a profound effect on Adam’s approach to both performing and teaching music.
In the last 11 years, Adam has taught clarinet, saxophone and piano in addition to theory, ear training and improvisation. His students have ranged in age from 8 to 86 years old! He currently holds various teaching roles in Wellington and is also leading an alto saxophone ensemble.
